No, the manga is LITERALLY an interpretation of the Book of Revelation in the New Testament. Here are just the ones I've come up with off the top of my head...
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” – Revelation 22:13. (Neo Queen Serenity was born once, died, and was reborn to usher in paradise forever.)
“It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast – all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.” – Revelation 13:7-8. (Chaos’ various incarnations taking the form of evil queens who deceive people into following them and try to supplant Serenity.)
“And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in its hand a great chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be set free for a short time.” – Revelation 20:1-3. (The conclusion of the third arc with Sailor Pluto and Sailor Saturn locking away Chaos and the fact Serenity’s kingdom enjoys 1,000 years of peace before its old enemy returns.)
“And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass.” – Revelation 21:10,11,21. (The appearance of Serenity’s kingdom.)
“Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, and they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.” – Revelation 20:6. (The senshi being reborn and instituting the Silver Millennium Kingdom.)
Not to mention in the future no one ages and dies anymore and they're all perpetually frozen at bishonen age (er, with the exception of Chibi Moon), which, based on the artist's work, is what they considered to be the "perfect age" to remain forever at.
I only watched a couple episodes of the first season of the actual anime, and you really don't get the same impression as you do from the manga; mostly because the anime got a lot of Villains-of-the-Week inserted into it to turn the thing into, more or less, Zentai Rangers. I can only hope the anime toned down Chibi Moon's demented Electra Complex a bit...
